Max is one of Phoebe's closest friends, but he doesn't know. He was first seen as Phoebe's spelling practice partner. He could be seen sitting on a park bench using a laptop or staring at his phone.
Max has a cat named Sandwich, which according to Phoebe he was really hungry when naming said pet.[1]
Max's name means, "The greatest." This makes sense because Phoebe thinks Max is the greatest.
Appearance[]
Max has somewhat long blonde hair and glasses that are rectangular but rounded at the bottom. (originally rectangular in the first few books). Other than Halloween, he is depicted as wearing black clothes.
At Phoebe and Marigold's Halloween party, he is dressed up as a Star Trek character.
On another Halloween night, he was sad because no-one believed he was in costume because he dressed up as Steve jobs.
Personality[]
Max is very interested in tech. He is often quiet, preferring to look at his phone than chat. He has also been shown to be extremely intelligent for his age.
Friends[]
Phoebe Grizelda Howell[]
Phoebe is one of Max's best friends. They met in school as spelling partners. Phoebe had a crush on him at this time, but it is unknown if it still stands. However, Max is seen stunned and happy when Phoebe asked him to the dance.
Voltina[]
Voltina is a dragon that can eat lightning. She is another of Max's best friends. They became friends after Voltina said she had nobody to relate to. Since Voltina is interested in electricity and Max is interested in tech, they have lots in common and are close friends.
Marigold Heavenly Nostrils
Marigold and Max strangely do not talk that much when they are with Phoebe. They have never talked alone. They are probably friends, but it is hard to tell.
Sue
During Camp Thespis, where they were alone, Sue asked if he wanted any slugs that she collected. Max responded, "Sure, whatcha got?" This may be the start of a friendship. Max and Voltina helped with the lighting in Phoebe and Sue's musical.
Dakota
It is unknown whether or not Dakota and Max are friends. Their one mutual friend is Phoebe. Max is seen to dislike the fact that Phoebe invited her to eat lunch with them. Dakota seems to have ignored him near the beginning of the series but now knows him through Phoebe. Max and Dakota worked together to find out what was causing the storm.
